Types of Sales

Auctions

Motley’s sells everything from an entire industrial facility to a single vehicle. Our international mailing list of over 30,000 customers is continually updated for effective direct mailings. Our high volume of annual advertising provides us with discounts and cooperative advertising so your marketing budget will go further. Assets may be sold at our at our I-95 Industrial Complex, Corporate Office Galleries, remote sale sites (Staunton and Lynchburg), or onsite at the asset location. Assets may also be consigned to one of our regularly scheduled auctions.

Sealed Bid Sales

Sealed bid sales are used when specialty items or small quantities of assets are to be sold. Brochures and bid packages describing the assets and outlining the terms and conditions of the sale are produced and mailed to prospective purchasers. Inspection periods are scheduled for several days prior to the bid deadline.

Going Concern Sales

When the proprietor or a corporation decide to sell a successful business, a Going Concern Sale may be appropriate. Motley’s will analyze the real, personal, and intangible property to determine marketability. We can partner with your accountant or our specialists can produce financial packages designed to maximize the value of your business.

Retail Liquidations (Going Out Of Business Sales)

The inventory of retail establishments is generally sold over a defined period of time with escalating discounts. An auction is often conducted on the last day of the sale period to sell the hard assets. A high volume of lower cost assets will bring a higher return when sold in this manner.

Brokerage

Brokering your assets is an alternative method best applied when time is not an issue. Our international customer base enables us to market your assets to those who have previously purchased similar items. We are in constant contact with dealers and previous buyers and our website is linked to markets worldwide.

Sale and Promotion

As soon as Motley’s is engaged, our marketing and promotion programs go into high gear!

  • A comprehensive direct mail piece containing accurate descriptions of every item to be sold is produced, with selected photographs. This piece is then mailed to our continually updated mailing list which is compiled of thousands of U.S. and international repeat buyers.
  • Newspaper and extensive trade journal advertising is created and placed prior to the auction.
  • Professionally designed and printed signs are placed on location to draw local interest.
  • Our comprehensive catalog is distributed to each bidder at registration

Auction Preparation

Preparation for your auction starts weeks, or months, prior to your actual auction date. The Motley’s team evaluates each piece of equipment and makes recommendations for repair, clean-up and painting, where necessary, in order to ensure the highest bid.

Auction site preparations are made prior to the sale. This preparation includes signs, tents, concessions and restrooms (as needed) as well as setting up our field office.

An important part of any auction is the inspection process. Inspection dates and times are made available to the public well before the sale.

Auction Day

This is the day that all of Motley’s marketing, planning and preparation come together and it is exciting! The auctioneer announces the terms and conditions of the sale to the bidding audience and the auction begins. Each item is individually introduced to the bidders. Bid spotters position themselves throughout the crowd and relay the bids to the auctioneer.

Settlement

All buyers are given a Statement of Purchases. The seller receives a comprehensive Sales Summary Report of all items sold including the final sales price. Included with the Sales Summary Report is your settlement check. Motley’s is proud of the accurate and rapid settlement process developed by our staff.
